Amsterdam city centre is only about 20 kilometres from Schiphol, but after a long flight the last leg still matters. Many hotels in the historic centre sit on narrow canal-side streets where stopping is restricted. Your driver knows these streets and drops you at the closest point where a car can legally stop, usually directly in front of or within a few steps of the entrance.
